What is a keratin treatment?
It is a smoothing temporary treatment that targets the cuticle or outside layer of the hair by depositing Keratin, a protein that your hair is made up of. The results remove frizz and a percentage of curl from the hair. It is heat activated and will make smoothing or straightening hair much less time consuming or incredibly shiny with body when air dried.
What is the process?
Hair is shampood three times with a special clarifying shampoo to prepare the hair for maximum absorption. Liquid Keratin is applied and blown dry directly on the hair. Followed by flatironing each strand with 450° iron in sections until smooth and straight. Hair must remain that way until shampood out, at which time hair can be air dried or ironed out for maximum smoothing in half the time.
How long does it take and cost?
It all depends on hair texture, length and desired results. We customize our Keratin service specifically for your hairtype and needs.
We have several and work together to choose the one that will work best with your hair. Average time is 2-3 hours. Prices start at $350.
How long does a keratin treatment last?
Depending on individual home maintenance and which Keratin system chosen, on average between 2 to 5 months.
Is it safe to apply a keratin treatment over colored and processed hair?
Yes, the treatment can be used over, colored, highlighted and previously relaxed hair. However, we advise that any chemical services be done prior to the Keratin treatment. If the Keratin is done first, you will need to wait 2 weeks before chemical services can be done.
I've heard Keratin treatments have formeldehyde?
In most cases, formeldehyde is used as a binding agent to adhere keratin to hair for temporary staying power. Much like in lipsticks and nail polish. We work with the lowest amounts available in our Keratins, keeping you and our stylists health safe.
Is it safe using formeldehyde?
The FDA allows products to contain up to 0.02% formeldehyde. Ours is less. (The Occupational Saety & Health Administration (OSHA) allows products to contain up to 0.1% formaldehyde.)
Will a Keratin treatment damage my hair?
No, Keratin treatments actually help damaged hair by filling in porous areas with keratin and conditioning agents. The hair looks healthier after a keratin. Shiny and manageable.
What is the maintenance?
Sulfate-free and sodium-free shampoos will prevent stripping the Keratin from the hair. However, with each shampoo a little keratin is lost so a keratin based shampoo will continually add keratin to maximize longevity of treatment. Also, avoid excessive shampooing, chlorine, and salt water for maximum benefits.
